5 Reasons to Become an EMDR Therapist from a Deeper Healing of Memory Perspective
Embracing a career as an EMDR therapist offers a unique pathway to contribute to the healing journey of individuals while deepening your understanding of the complexities of memory and trauma. Here are FIVE Reasons to become an EMDR Therapist:
- Transformative Healing: EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) enables therapists to facilitate profound healing by addressing the root causes of trauma stored in memories. By guiding clients through the reprocessing of these memories, therapists can help them transform their painful experiences into sources of strength and resilience. There is no need to engage in the narrative story to heal.
- Restoration of Self-Identity: Trauma can often distort an individual’s sense of self and their place in the world. As an EMDR therapist, you have the opportunity to help clients reclaim their identities by helping them integrate traumatic memories into their life narratives, thus fostering a sense of wholeness and self-acceptance.
- Neuroscience-Based Approach: EMDR is grounded in the understanding of how memory works and the brain's capacity for healing. By becoming an EMDR therapist, you engage with cutting-edge neuroscience, utilizing it to help clients rewire their brains, reduce distress, and promote adaptive functioning, making your practice both innovative and impactful.
- Empowering Clients: EMDR therapy empowers clients by equipping them with tools to manage their emotional responses and triggers related to past traumas and activating healing in their own brain. As a therapist, witnessing clients regain control over their lives and emotions is a deeply rewarding experience that underscores the transformative power of memory healing.
- Holistic Integration of Experiences: EMDR therapy allows for the integration of the mind, body and spiritual resources to activate the brain and body’s own healing mechanisms from an adaptive perspective. Healing memories can occur on a deep transformational level without re-living with the stress that causes underlying pathologies.

Eligibility Requirements for Enrollment
Before enrolling, please review the EMDRIA guidelines to confirm your eligibility. Pre-licensed clinicians and graduate students are welcome to apply with a letter of support from a clinical supervisor.
Licensed
To be accepted to participate in the EMDR Basic Training program, you must be licensed to practice independently as a mental health clinician.
Prelicensed
- These clinicians actively pursue a mental health license through their state board (or province) while working under a licensed supervisor. These license types include associate, intern, limited, provisional, temporary, and pre-license.
- Qualifying pre-licensed mental health clinicians must have a master's degree in the mental health field (Counseling, Marriage and Family Therapy, Psychology, Psychiatry, Social Work) or a related discipline and must actively pursue a full license through their state board (or province) while working under a licensed supervisor.
- Individuals who only hold a chemical dependency or substance abuse license are not eligible, as these licenses generally do not allow for a mental health scope of practice.
Alternate Eligibility for Graduate Students
- Qualifying graduate students must be enrolled in a master’s or doctoral program in the mental health field (Counseling, Marriage, Family Therapy, Psychology, Psychiatry, Psychiatric Nursing, Social Work) or related mental health disciplines. Students must have completed their core graduate academic coursework and be in their graduate program's practicum/internship portion. First-year graduate students are not eligible.
- Graduate students must be on a licensing track and working under the supervision of a fully licensed mental health clinician.
- Graduate students who would like to take an EMDR Training course will need to submit certain documentation (graduate transcript, practicum or internship details, and a letter from their supervisor, which includes the supervisor's license information and number) to verify their eligibility. Students do not need to provide EMDRIA with any documentation unless specifically asked by EMDRIA staff. Any documentation that needs to be submitted would go directly to the training provider either prior to or during the training registration process.
For more information on eligibility, please contact the EMDR International Association.
