Today I want to start with something honest. Not the polished version, just a real story of why our podcast exists. This comes from Simon Sinek's work on purpose and vision. He talks about two different camps of people wanting to launch the mission of flight — one group had all the resources, the staff, all the materials. But it was the team with the clearest why that got off the ground first.

I wanted to share that story because I think for therapists, if we've ever sat after a session wondering — am I doing this right? Why does this work feel so heavy? Where do I go to talk about these clinical questions? — this is where our podcast and this community was built for you.

It is the intersection of something that built over years with me sitting and grappling with this gap in community. What I kept experiencing was a gap where trauma trainings barely addressed grief, or grief trainings that didn't have enough tools when trauma showed up, or specialty trauma treatment spaces where grief was a niche conversation and not a central one.

I began thinking about how we manage our own nervous systems, our own secondary traumatic stress. It began about three years ago when I realized something that we all carry quietly — we are deeply connected to our clients, but we don't always have a place to put that.

Honestly, I went out looking for a community and I didn't find one. So I began thinking about this idea. Since November, this has been quietly developing in the background and I finally just took action. When I turned 40, I committed to myself: I'm just going to say yes.

So eventually I stopped waiting for someone else to build it, and I built the place that I wished had existed.

Kathy on the Couch isn't just a podcast — it's part of something bigger. It's a community built around one simple idea: holding space for those who hold it all. I began in child welfare and I have a lot of those stories that still sit with me. Therapists are out there figuring out how to do it alone. We get CE credits, but not always real clinical conversation. We get trainings, but not community. That gap is why Kathy on the Couch exists.
